The NEDS was created to enable analyses of emergency department (ED) utilization patterns and support public health professionals, administrators, policymakers, and clinicians in their decision-making regarding this critical source of care. The ED serves a dual role in the U.S. healthcare system infrastructure as a point of entry for approximately 50% of inpatient hospital admissions and as a setting for treat-and-release outpatient visits.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has released 2007 data for its Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS), the largest emergency department (ED) database in the United States. It can be used for many purposes. For example, it can be used to generate statistics on hospital ED visits by patients with various types of coverage as well as the uninsured.

The STATE System is an electronic data warehouse containing up-to-date and historical state-level data on tobacco use prevention and control.

The STATE System presently offers the ability to generate or build reports for Behaviors, Demographics, Economics, Environment, Funding, Health Consequences and Costs, and Legislation topic areas in the following 4 report formats:

A detailed report can be generated to display data for a selected topic area (e.g., Economics), measure (e.g., Cigarette Sales), state, and year.

Colorado Hospital Report Card

The Colorado Hospital Report Card was created by Colorado House Bill 06-1278. This bill required general hospitals in the state of Colorado to report on clinical measures that would allow consumers to compare healthcare services of these facilities. This data was required to be made available on an internet website, and should allow consumers to conduct an interactive search to compare information from specific hospitals. The implementation plan for the Colorado Hospital Report Card required the data to be clear and easy to understand, and there will be appropriate guidance on how to use and understand the data.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) selected the Colorado Hospital Association (CHA) as the entity to create and maintain the Colorado Hospital Report Card. The CHA Hospital Report Card Implementation Committee is primarily responsible for identifying and recommending the necessary elements of the Colorado Hospital Report Card. This committee meets on a monthly basis to evaluate the overall effectiveness of the report card, and will assess and recommend new measures for inclusion in the report card on an annual basis.
